Battery plant announcement is good news for Michigan
General Motors said at a press conference Monday at the North American International Auto Show that it will open a plant to make lithium-ion build battery packs for the upcoming Chevrolet Volt, which is expected to go on sale in late 2010.
Battery capacity and longevity have been key sticking points in the development of the electric car. But GM is promising that it will become a leader in dell laptop battery development.
Besides the manufacturing plant, GM announced that it will open a research center for advanced dell 6y270 battery,dell 75uyf battery development and that it will partner with the University of Michigan to develop a specialized curriculum for battery engineers.
"The design, development and production of advanced batteries must be a core competency for GM," Rick Wagoner, the automaker's chairman and CEO, said at the announcement at the Detroit auto show.
For years, Michigan has watched as the domestic automotive industry contracted, leading to painful job cuts and economic hardship. But GM's announcements means that Michigan will again take a leadership role in auto development and manufacturing.

There's still work to be done. Wagoner said that the plans to open the battery development center and the manufacturing plant in Michigan are contingent on negotiations with state and local officials. GM wants to locate these facilities in Michigan. The state's political leaders must do all they can to keep this work in the state.
